Fresno is a bustling city with lots of urban amenities and entertainment options. The city is also home to popular tourist attractions like The Warnors theater, the historic Santa Fe Passenger Depot and the Fresno Water Tower. We encourage our clients to attend Temperance Training classes at CrossFit HYPE as often as possible. (The gym is only 1 mile away from Temperance House!) Participation in these classes provides critical structure and support needed in early recovery. Being physically active in early recovery is beneficial for a number of reasons.
The Temperance House
The 27th Street Historic District includes the Crouch Memorial Church of God and Christ,[3] a Romanesque Revival style church located at the northeast corner of E. It was built from 1895 to 1896 for the Haven Methodist Episcopal Church.[4][5] In the early 1900s, the church was a center of the city's prohibition movement. The Los Angeles Times reported that the congregation had been divided by ultra-modernism and "circus ballyhoo" methods.[13] The church has been affiliated with the Church of God in Christ as Crouch Memorial Church since about 1950.

The 27th Street Historic District is a historic district in the South Los Angeles area of Los Angeles, California. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 as part of the multiple property submission for African Americans in Los Angeles. Cal State Northridge maintains a large collection of temperance-related items. Americans could watch the sin-and-redemption cycle themselves, in five acts.
There was talk of building the U.S. 101 through the temple property or having it become the site of a large municipal courts building. In May 1950, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered the structure’s demolition for the Hollywood Freeway project, though that route was moved just slightly to the north. Phoenix House California currently serves over 37,000 women, men, and young people annually – including family members, parents, teachers, students, veterans, the homeless, and men who are recently released from incarceration.

The chapter continued to use the church as its headquarters, but ardently desired its own building. As the Boom of the 1880s came to greater Los Angeles, the chapter succeeded in its effort and committed to a $45,000 four-story brick structure at the northwest corner of Fort Street (soon renamed Broadway) and Temple. The prior evening, Willard spoke at the church on “Home Protection” and talked about schools, churches and homes as being the enemies of the dreaded saloon. They talked about the struggles of staying clean and decided to help one another through the tough days ahead. Together, they moved into a brownstone on Manhattan’s West Side and lived as a community, encouraging and helping each other to stay sober. The temperance movement had legitimate, even life-and-death reasons for doing what it did. Then and now, temperance crusaders were lampooned as hatchet-wielding, hatchet-faced, uptight spoilsports, zealots who smashed up barrooms and beer halls and in general wanted to stop men from having a good time. In April 1889, the temple was finally completed, though the organization had to keep working to pay off the debt it contracted to get the structure finished. The building was also less than inspiring architecturally, at least to some minds.

Their message did not always resonate with recent immigrants from places like Italy and Ireland, and the movement sometimes singled them out in ugly language, along with people of color, for resisting the call to go dry. But California temperance crusaders were paradoxically more gentle-minded with Asian immigrants — they deplored the “burning shame” of the treatment of Chinese people here. You are such intelligent people that you know the vigorous demand that is growing up for the prohibition of the manufacture and sale of liquor. There are some people even yet who cannot understand the reason for the movement .
If you created a Venn diagram of 19th century social movements, you would find hefty overlap among the crusades for temperance, for the abolition of slavery and for women’s suffrage. With the postwar era came a mounting effort to remake downtown Los Angeles, especially the civic center and nearby areas. One 1949 article reported on a meeting that purported to show what the area would look like in 1970, though, as is too often the case, much of this did not come to pass.
But in fact, a number of men were having too good a time, or were having a dreadful time and drinking to forget their misery. That was called the temperance movement — temperance, which could mean both moderation in drinking or a complete teetotaling ban. This trajectory involved what has been termed the “Woman’s Crusade” including the growing temperance movement that was significantly weighted towards religious organizations and middle and upper class advocates. After joining an Illinois state temperance society, Willard went to Cleveland where the WCTU was formed with her elected corresponding secretary. You’ll find Kevin at the front of the house welcoming dinner guests or moving through the restaurant and talking to customers. In 1979, Phoenix House expands to the west coast and is gifted a property on Fruit Street in Santa Ana and opens its first residential substance abuse treatment center in California. Expansion of services continues and in 1996, we begin work in California prisons, jails, and other correctional settings, offering substance abuse and mental health programs to hundreds of men and adolescents each year. In 2011, in response to the ever-growing substance abuse crisis, we begin offering school-based prevention, mental health and outpatient services in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Without a doubt, the temperance movement was created and led mostly by white, middle- and upper-middle-class, Protestant women.
In 1830, as the temperance movement was finding its voice, drinking-age Americans, mostly men, were knocking back about seven gallons of liquor every year — about three times as much as today’s average of about 2.45 gallons. It is a building which has caused more comments, from its odd architectural design, than any other in the city. Some think it is a handsome structure, and others think it is as ugly as sin . The building seems to be of no particular style of architecture and of all styles, but it is substantially and solidly constructed, and occupies of the most commanding sites in the city.
